Annette E M Courtemanche

My art journey is lifelong and continuously evolving. At university having committed to a Degree in English and Canadian Studies, I took every opportunity to take Art History courses as electives. As a self-taught artist working primarily in painting with acrylic and mixed media, I continue to push the boundaries as my art tries to negotiate what occupies the space around us and how we perceive those spaces. I am inspired by landscapes, they have a poetry that speaks to me. They are magical, majestic, serene, and spiritual and I try to convey their beauty onto my canvas. I love the changing of seasons and perfusion of colour that imprints itself on my subconscious. Creating art comes from my heart and a passion to bring beauty into the world. I have done a fair bit of travelling and since memory is subjective, I try to capture the essence of a place by creating tension between representational and abstract. My use of bold colours is intentional as it evokes emotions and attachments, and while nature is ever present in my work, the work remains abstract, relying on the viewer to make a connection. I am happiest when I am painting and my process is organic, starting with a gesture, a choice of colours and the feel of the paint on the canvas. Sometimes that takes me through many twists and turns and ends with beautiful self-discovery that I wish to share with you! Annette E M Courtemanche is an artist who lives and works in Toronto, Canada. She studied at the University of Toronto. Most work is held privately, and she is now exhibiting publicly.
